little green men in the cathedrals of wales?

friends of ours recently returned from a wonderful trip to wales. they spoke of little green gnomes/men/figurines found tucked away in various cathedrals.
they really didn't know much about them and we are all very curious now as to the origin and story of these little fellows. can anyone tell us a website to visit or explain the significance of them? are they only found in wales or also in the rest of great britain?

they said the little fellas are tucked into odd places here and there in the cathedrals. for example in the cathedral the queen worships at when she is in wales the little fella is tucked under a fold down seat alongside her majesty's pew.
as for photos they lost their camera....

Yes, many churches have 'green men' tucked away into the medieval architecture.
