1964 The Tribute booked studio time in Big Adventure Studios in November of 2000.They set all their equipment up in a circle and proceeded to record all 14 of these songs playing together all at once.There are no overdubs,just the original takes.The entire CD was recorded and mixed in 9 hours.(in November of course)Enjoy! |

The Portland Oregon music scene is alive and well. Very alive, very well! The Shins, Sleater Kinney, Helio Sequence, Decemberists, Sleater Kinney, The Dandy Warhols, The High Violets, The Thermals and Steven Malkumus. And now joining them is THE UPSIDEDOWN who just released their debut album TRUST ELECTRICITY on Reverb Records. The band had help in the studio from Dandy Warhol and Elliott Smith collaborator Tony Lash (ex-Heatmiser member) and it sounds absolutely brilliant. The band formed out of the ashes of seminal Portland shoegazer band The Bella Low and have been winning fans and influencing people ever since. They just finished up a full-on national tour and radio & press were faithful: The Willamette Week described The Upsidedown as: "dirty, glammed-up, drugged-down guitar rock with a dark heart. Their brand of ambient rock carries forth in a grand tradition: carefully constructed Dandies drone, pop hooks and devil-may-care-decadence." The Willamette Week know how to call it. KPSU described the band as "The best band that will come out of Portland in 2004!" With thumping, psychedelic, sexy and danceable beat driven songs like "Wake Up Drive Thru," "Blackeye Liner" and the Portland/George W. Bush riots inspired track "Pepper Spray," The Upsidedown are on a mission to bring some big bad dirty fun back into the world of independent music. They also successfully navigate territory formerly travelled by Love and Rockets and Echo & the Bunnymen, but with their own style, sound and attitude. And their cover version of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" is like no other. The band close off the album with their version, which is dripping in fuzz, swagger and sex. Prepare yourself to embrace The Upsidedown sound, which just recently hit shelves in North America. |

SEPTEMBER ISSUE (DVD) (SPECIAL EDITION/WS/ENG/ENG Fashionistas finally get a glimpse of the mastermind behind the lion's share of the American fashion industry, Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue, in the dishy documentary The September Issue. The title refers to the fattest monthly edition of the fashion bible, and the sheer creative and financial efforts it takes to stage and publish it--not unlike a full feature film pressed inside glossy printed pages.Wintour, often thought to be the inspiration for the Meryl Streep character in The Devil Wears Prada, is revealed by director R.J. Cutler (producer of The War Room) to be both more open and human than her carefully cultivated persona, but still guarded and tough to read. There's less focus on any possible megalomania on the part of Wintour--perhaps that's implied--and more on just what an endeavor it is to produce that issue of Vogue, its impact on the fashion world, and what kind of critter could work on such a narrow playing field, yet have her impact realized on such a vast scale. The September Issue shows the battle of wills that goes on behind the scenes of every aspect of fashion publishing--and sometimes it's not pretty. The ruthless Wintour, at Vogue for two decades, has an equally strong-minded inner circle, including most notably Vogue's creative director, Grace Coddington, a former model (like Wintour herself) who clashes often, and colorfully, with her frenemy and longtime colleague Wintour. The political maneuvering can seem exhausting to the viewer, but the dishy reality is just too delicious. "Fashion is not about looking back," says Wintour. "It's about looking forward." And as with the best documentaries about fashion, including Unzipped and Lagerfeld Confidential, The September Issue leaves the viewer with a renewed appreciation for the beauty, creativity and energy behind fashion--even if one is watching, happily, in jeans and a T-shirt. --A.T. Canadian filmmaker Thom Fitzgerald made his name on the gay film scene with his dramatic fantasia The Hanging Garden, but with Beefcake he captures a more lightheartedly dreamy tone: The film takes its lead from Valentine Hooven's lip-smackingly compulsive coffee table tome of the same name. We're offered a teasing, pseudo-history of mid-century pop male photography, featuring quaint muscle-mag shots and nude "studies" of, among others, a hungrily seductive young Joe Dallesandro (before he made his name in underground Andy Warhol flicks like Flesh). Dallesandro's here to talk, along with other "models" who mostly supply commentary on Bob Mizer, the enterprising founder of the Athletic Model Guild. Fitzgerald blends the real-life documentary material into his fictional confection concerning a sexy bumpkin who falls into Mizer's AMG set-up (it produced America's first closeted gay erotica publication, passing itself off as an innocently obsessive guide to health and fitness). The campy original story--the hero's Valley of the Dolls-inspired name is Neil O'Hara--is a bit dumb, actually, mostly because it's not even half as interesting as the real deal. Lots of innocently nude frolicking doesn't hurt, though, and the film engages when it manages to be as naively sweet and erotic as Mizer's bygone magazines. --Steve Wiecking Studio: Strand Releasing Release Date: 04/06/2006 |
