The kitchen is the main part of a house where cooking takes place. It is necessary to design it the way we want it to look. We should also feel comfortable using it. It should be placed such that it has enough lighting and it should be well ventilated. The place to keep every thing in the kitchen has to be well planned.

Each aspect of the kitchen has to be thought of. There should be enough space to walk in the kitchen. The main thing in a kitchen is the working triangle - with the counter top, the sink and the fridge. This distance should be such that it gives easy access to all the three main areas and one can cook comfortably. This will involve less running about in the kitchen. It is convenient if the fridge is near the counter top. The vegetables can be taken out of the fridge and cut and used for cooking. The dishwasher could be near the sink. The counter should be at the right height for the person who is doing the cooking.

The cabinets are very important to store things in a kitchen. While designing wall cabinets in a kitchen build the corner cabinets and then the center ones. They can be made of wood and have either hinges or sliding doors. They should be moisture proof. The shelf space should be specifically designed to keep all your kitchen utensils and gadgets. The cabinets should be enough drawers for keeping the small things used in the kitchen. The larger pots and pans can be hung or kept in bigger cabinets. The cabinets should be arranged in such a manner that it takes all appliances of different sizes. The cabinet sizes can also be adjustable so that we can make changes later, if we want to. They should be placed such that it they are convenient to use without any strain to the back.

The kitchen should be well equipped with the necessary gadgets to get the cooking done quickly and efficiently. This means that the kitchen should have a good stove, a fridge, a dishwasher, a microwave oven, and a food processor. The taps should be able to provide both cold and hot water. The kitchen should have an exhaust fan and a chimney to make the kitchen smoke free.

There is need for the kitchen to be clean and tidy. The well ventilated kitchen should have window sills which can be decorated with small plants or herbs. The tiles in the kitchen should match the flooring. The curtains should be color coordinated. Bright and rich colors will make the kitchen look attractive.

In some homes, the kitchen is the place meant only for cooking. In other homes the kitchen is also used for dining. Such kitchens should be big. Children love to spend time with their mothers. So, the kitchen should be safe for children and pets. Any kitchen utensils and sharp objects should not be within reach of children. The cabinets can have magnetic locks to keep the children from opening them.

In some homes, people also entertain in the kitchen. For this an even larger kitchen is essential. The kitchen is also called the psychological "hearth" of a home. No wonder a lot of thought has to be gone into, before planning a kitchen that suits your needs. A lot of material is available on the web. Be sure to use those ideas and also consult interior decorators and others who have built homes, before designing your kitchen through.

which litter is better: Feline Pine or Tidy Cats?

I'm really like Tidy Cats, since I've been using it for ym cat's litter box. Now that I'm thinking about it, I like Feline Pine because it is NATURAL, or is it? Is that product really natural. I want to help the earth as much as I can. Please tell me the cons and pros about each item to help me decide. If you know any natural or organic brands, please tell me! Thanks!

The bad thing about clay cat litter is silica. When your cat and YOU breath it in. "Inhaled silica dust has been implicated as a cause of lung cancer and other respiratory diseases in humans and several animal species."

In pottery/ceramic class we had to clean the table and stuff with a wet sponge. We couldn't sweep the floor because you'll make the dust go into the air and breath it in.

So when ever you cat goes potty and digs it's making dust come in the air it breathes it and and you & your family does too. The same thing happens when you go clean the litter, you'll digging in there and you make tons of dust come up. It even worst for your cat when you have a covered litter box.

There are different earth friendly cat litter out there like
-Yesterday news(pellets of recycled newspaper http://www.yesterdaysnews.com/?D=1114339&T=4780207),
-World best cat litter(made from corn wheat http://www.worldsbestcatlitter.com/ )
-sweat cat litter (made from wheat scoop http://swheatscoop.com/)
- feline pine (made from pine http://www.naturesearth.com/)
-ARM & HAMMER® Essentials™ Natural Clumping Litte(http://www.armandhammeressentials.com/litter.aspx)

You have to pick a litter that your cat likes. Some cat don't like pellets like Feline Pine so you have to experiment with different cat litters.

"What if Marco Polo had owned tape recorder?" This intriguing concept is raised in the liner notes to this impressive two-CD set, which wanders along ancient Asian trade routes known as the Silk Road. The first disc, Masters & Traditions, deals with formal styles performed by and for sophisticated connoisseurs. Meanwhile, the music on Minstrels and Lovers is played by amateurs who are part of daily life and thus reach a wider audience. The imaginary caravan passes through Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and Afghanistan, encountering nomads, mystics, and bards along the way. The instruments are scratchy, pungent, and/or serene, while the singers weave a potent spell out of a millennium's worth of slow-changing rural and urban vistas. In the opening essay, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the project's artistic director, pleads for intercultural communication and empathy. This compilation provides an exotic, brave, entertaining first step in that direction. --Christina Roden

What if Marco Polo had owned a tape recorder? And what if his epic travels along the Silk Road had taken place not at the end of the 13th century, but at the beginning of the 21st? Far-fetched conjectures to be sure, but our compilation The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan offers a glimpse of the rich musical life that an intrepid and curious traveler like Marco Polo might find in the lands of the Silk Road today.

Whichever other Respighi tone poem recordings you ultimately purchase, you MUST own this one. Since the early `60s it has been the standard by which all others have been judged, and in terms of both sound and performance, it has never really been surpassed. The final march of Pines is simply incredible: thundering bass drum, crashing cymbals and gongs, bellowing brass--nobody since has brought the whole thing off with the same combination of excitement and discipline. The performance of La Mer has similar virtues. Fritz Reiner was a podium tyrant, but a tremendous musician all the same. This may be his finest recording. --David Hurwitz

THE INCREDIBLE STORY OF A YOUNG CREWS MAIDEN VOYAGE ONBOARD THE MOST ADVANCED STARSHIP EVER CREATED: THE USS ENTERPRISE.IN THE MIDST OF AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY FULL OF OPTIMISM, INTRIGUE, COMEDY AND COSMIC PERIL, THE NEW RECRUITS MUST FIND A WAY TO STOP AN EVIL BEING WHOSE MISSION OF VENGEANCE THREATENS MANKIND.

J.J. Abrams' 2009 feature film was billed as "not your father's Star Trek," but your father will probably love it anyway. And what's not to love? It has enough action, emotional impact, humor, and sheer fun for any moviegoer, and Trekkers will enjoy plenty of insider references and a cast that seems ideally suited to portray the characters we know they'll become later. Both a prequel and a reboot, Star Trek introduces us to James T. Kirk (Chris Pine of The Princess Diaries 2), a sharp but aimless young man who's prodded by a Starfleet captain, Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), to enlist and make a difference. At the Academy, Kirk runs afoul of a Vulcan commander named Spock (Zachary Quinto of Heroes), but their conflict has to take a back seat when Starfleet, including its new ship, the Enterprise, has to answer an emergency call from Vulcan. What follows is a stirring tale of genocide and revenge launched by a Romulan (Eric Bana) with a particular interest in Spock, and we get to see the familiar crew come together, including McCoy (Karl Urban), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Sulu (John Cho), Chekhov (Anton Yelchin), and Scottie (Simon Pegg). The action and visuals make for a spectacular Big-Screen Movie, though the plot by Abrams and his writers, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (who worked together on Transformers and with Abrams on Alias and Mission Impossible III), and his producers (fellow Losties Damon Lindeloff and Bryan Burk) can be a bit of a mind-bender (no surprise there for Lost fans). Hardcore fans with a bone to pick may find faults, but resistance is futile when you can watch Kirk take on the Kobayashi Maru scenario or hear McCoy bark, "Damnit, man, I'm a doctor, not a physicist!" An appearance by Leonard Nimoy and hearing the late Majel Barrett Roddenberry as the voice of the computer simply sweeten the pot. Now comes the hard part: waiting for some sequels to this terrific prequel. --David Horiuchi Stills from Star Trek (Click for larger image)

With the aid of British sommelier Steven Spurrier, American vintner Jim Barrett makes a splash at the 1976 Judgment of Paris blind taste test.

"Bottle shock" describes what can happen to wine as it travels from place to place. Set in 1976, Randall Miller's widescreen docudrama concerns the real-life showdown between California's wineries and their French counterparts. Napa Valley's Jim Barrett (Lost Highway's Bill Pullman) has been plugging away for years with minimal success. A former attorney, Barrett runs Chateau Montelena with his wayward son, Bo (Chris Pine, the Star Trek prequel's Captain Kirk), who would rather do anything than assist his stern father. Bo's co-workers include Gustavo (Six Feet Under's Freddy Rodríguez) and Sam (Transformers' Rachael Taylor), who long to produce the perfect chardonnay. Naturally, the young men compete for the favors of the beautiful blonde (the movie's least interesting angle). Across the Atlantic, Steven Spurrier (Alan Rickman) struggles to keep his Parisian wine shop going (cheapskate American Dennis Farina is his only regular customer). Then Spurrier conceives a contest to attract customers; surely, his beloved French growers will put those upstart Yanks in their place. He flies to Napa to look around, and persuades the Barretts to compete. Miller and his wife, screenwriter Jody Savin, previously worked with Pullman and Rickman on Nobel Son, but decided to release Bottle Shock first. Though comparisons to Sideways will be inevitable, the filmmakers take more of a historical look at California wine country. The "Judgment of Paris" changed the face of the business forever, and they've found a lively way to recount the tale. --Kathleen C.
